SUBB at Sunset at Highcliffe Castle
Highcliffe Castle occupies a striking position on the Dorset cliffs, its Romantic Gothic architecture rising against the backdrop of the English Channel. Built in the 1830s from stone salvaged from medieval French buildings, the structure incorporates intricate carvings and tall windows that catch the light. The surrounding grounds roll down towards the shoreline, offering uninterrupted views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight needles.
These outdoor concerts feature Swing Unlimited Big Band, a south coast ensemble recognised for their broad repertoire.
True to their guiding principle that anything can swing if arranged properly, the musicians move seamlessly between eras. Brass and reed sections drive classic numbers associated with Count Basie and Duke Ellington, while vocalists handle arrangements of later pop material reimagined in big band style.
The stage faces the lawn where audiences settle on the grass. As performances unfold, the shifting colours of the sky complement the music, with the castle towers providing a permanent silhouette behind the players. Sea breezes carry the sound across the open space, adding to the informal atmosphere typical of these gatherings.
Picnics spread out across the grounds contribute to the relaxed feel, with groups arranging chairs or blankets to suit their preference. The natural slope of the land ensures most spots offer clear sightlines to the band and the horizon beyond.
The venue’s coastal location enhances the overall experience. Cliff paths lead directly from the grounds to the beach below, where shingle gives way to sand at low tide. Zigzag steps descend through planted areas, connecting the castle level to the promenade.
The blend of historic setting, coastal outlook, and energetic live music creates evenings that draw together different generations on the lawn.
This year’s event takes place Sunday 5 July, 6pm – 9pm. Book tickets via eventbrite.
