South Coast Wine Festival returns to Highcliffe Castle

Highcliffe Castle once again provides the setting for the South Coast Wine Festival, a three-day gathering that combines structured tastings with an expanded outdoor programme of music, food and conversation. More than two and a half thousand tickets have already been sold, confirming steady demand for the event at the Grade I listed building.

The core of the festival remains the tasting experience. Visitors receive nearly two hours of access to more than three hundred wines drawn from British and international producers. Exhibitors pour and discuss their bottles inside the castle and across the grounds, giving both newcomers and experienced drinkers the chance to compare styles side by side. The format deliberately keeps the sampling period limited so that the remainder of the day can be spent outdoors.

Organisers have enlarged the outdoor area after feedback from previous years. A larger stage, additional food traders and an extended bar now occupy the garden space that overlooks the Channel. The intention is to create a more complete festival atmosphere once the formal tasting session ends. Live entertainment runs through the weekend, with different themes on successive days. One evening features a country music tribute act, another a celebration of a well-known pop catalogue aimed at an over-thirties audience, while the final day includes talks from wine professionals.

The castle itself supplies much of the appeal. Its elevated position, formal lawns and historic interiors offer a setting that few purpose-built venues can match. Guests move between the tasting rooms and the open air without leaving the estate, and the sea views remain a constant backdrop. For many visitors the combination of serious wine and a dramatic coastal location is the principal draw.

Marketing director Matt Maclean has acknowledged that the outdoor zone needed improvement. Investment this year has focused on stage size, trader numbers and overall flow so that the garden feels integrated rather than secondary. The presence of the Bournemouth One Blue Crew throughout the weekend adds a further local element of music and atmosphere.

Ticket sales indicate that the formula continues to work. The early figure of more than two and a half thousand sold places the event among the stronger summer attractions on the south coast. Capacity is managed through timed tasting slots, which helps control numbers inside the historic spaces while allowing free movement in the grounds once the session is complete.

Highcliffe benefits from the concentration of visitors. Local accommodation, restaurants and shops see additional custom over the three days. The castle receives hire income and the wider publicity that comes with a well-attended specialist festival. For a town whose economy rests heavily on leisure and hospitality, such events provide a useful mid-summer pulse of activity.

The festival occupies a clear niche. It is neither a mass open-air concert nor a closed trade fair. The emphasis stays on tasting and discovery, with entertainment and food treated as supporting rather than dominant elements. That balance appears to suit the character of the castle and the expectations of the audience that has returned in successive years.

As the event settles into its regular place on the calendar, the practical lessons of earlier editions are being applied. Larger outdoor capacity, clearer entertainment programming and continued attention to the quality of the wines on offer form the current approach. Highcliffe Castle remains the constant: a historic building whose architecture and setting continue to give the South Coast Wine Festival a distinctive identity among the region’s summer gatherings.
